One year ago today, Congressman Al Green stood as the keynote speaker for a powerful memorial sponsored by the Bridge Builder Foundation, honoring the legacy of Walter Moses Burton—the first Black sheriff elected in the United States in 1869, Fort Bend County, TX.
Sheriff Burton’s story is one of resilience, leadership, and progress. Born into slavery, he rose to become a trailblazer in law enforcement and public service, paving the way for generations to come. His legacy reminds us that justice, service, and commitment to the community know no boundaries. The current sheriff of Fort Bend County, is Eric Fagan.
As we reflect on this historic moment, we renew our dedication to preserving the stories of Black sheriffs who have shaped our nation. Their contributions must never be forgotten.
