Visit The Black Sheriffs’ Memorial

Experience a Storied Legacy in the Heart of Washington, D.C.

Nestled in the tranquil Woodbridge neighborhood, just a brief ten minutes from downtown Washington, the Lucius D. Amerson Memorial and Exhibit is a moving tribute to Sheriff Lucius D. Amerson, the first Black sheriff elected in the South since Reconstruction. This private memorial invites visitors into a story of resilience, courage, and the ongoing impact of African American sheriffs on U.S. history.

Upon arrival, guests begin with a video orientation, setting the stage for a safe, contemplative visit. The outdoor memorial features a dignified bronze bust of Sheriff Amerson on a striking gray granite pedestal. Through a self-guided tour, visitors explore the legacy of Black sheriffs across generations, with narratives honoring their roles in civil and social justice.

Inside, the exhibit showcases rare vintage photographs capturing the Civil Rights era, contextualized through Amerson’s pioneering role. To preserve the sanctity of this experience, groups of six enter at a time, with strict no-photography and no-filming policies. For reflection, the outdoor area observes a respectful no-smoking, no-pets, and no-gum policy.
