In January 2022, I had the profound honor of giving remarks in Tuskegee, Alabama, where we unveiled a highway marker dedicated to Sheriff Lucius D. Amerson, the first Black sheriff elected in the South since Reconstruction. Elected in 1966 in Macon County, Alabama, Sheriff Amerson’s trailblazing leadership continues to inspire us to this day. During that ceremony, I reflected on the critical role of sheriffs in maintaining the rule of law and called for increased financial support to empower them in serving their communities effectively. That moment was not just a commemoration—it became a call to action.
This moment sparked a journey of discovery. Over the following year, I delved into the history of African American sheriffs, tracing their stories of resilience, leadership, and innovation. While many know the legacy of Bass Reeves, the fearless Deputy U.S. Marshal from 1875, I unearthed the earlier contributions of Walter Moses Burton, elected in 1869 as the nation’s first Black sheriff in Fort Bend County, Texas. Burton’s legacy—transitioning from sheriff to state senator, where he championed the creation of Prairie View A&M University—embodies the transformative power of leadership. These stories are not just historical; they are aspirational, paving the way for generations to come.
Fast forward to 2024, I am proud to announce the establishment of the Lucius D. Amerson, Bridge Builder Foundation and the National Black Sheriffs Association (NBSA). The Foundation preserves the history of African American sheriffs and operates the only memorial and exhibition in the nation dedicated to the history of african-american sheriffs. Located in Washington, DC, is slated to open in May 2025. The NBSA is dedicated to professional development, knowledge sharing, and building a collaborative network of sheriffs across the nation.
Today, with over 170 African American sheriffs—17 of whom are women—we stand on the shoulders of trailblazers like Walter Moses Burton and Lucius D. Amerson. Together, we are committed to strengthening public safety, addressing pressing challenges, and embracing innovations that will shape the future of law enforcement.
